Over the course of the week, we will explore legendary gardens such as Great Dixter and Sissinghurst, as well as elegant country houses, romantic landscapes, and hidden corners of the Sussex countryside. But this journey is about more than gardens. Sussex has long attracted artists, writers, and designers, and throughout the tour, we will also meet local artists and makers, discover charming villages, and enjoy time exploring shops that reflect the region’s rich traditions.

Highlights

Just south of London, between the rolling hills of the South Downs and the English Channel, Sussex holds a special place in the history of English garden design.

Sussex became closely associated with the Arts and Crafts movement, where the relationship between house, garden and landscape was central. That philosophy still defines the region today. Formal structure often blends seamlessly with looser, naturalistic planting. Kitchen gardens thrive alongside romantic borders and more contemporary designs. Many of these gardens were shaped by strong creative personalities; artists, writers, and passionate horticulturalists, and that personal vision remains tangible.

WHAT ARE PEOPLE SAYING

WHERE YOU’LL STAY

The Star, Alfriston

During our time in Sussex, we will stay at The Star, a beautiful boutique hotel located in the medieval village of Alfriston, at the foot of the rolling South Downs. Originally built in 1345 as a hostel for monks and pilgrims, this historic inn has been thoughtfully restored by Olga and Alex Polizzi, blending centuries of character with elegant modern comfort. Behind its timbered 15th-century façade you’ll find welcoming interiors with exposed beams, antiques, fireplaces, and beautifully designed rooms.

The hotel sits at the heart of the village, with a lively bar opening onto the high street and a peaceful courtyard that has become the centre of the property. Each of the 29 bedrooms is individually decorated, filled with natural light and traditional English charm.
