Villas & Gardens of Lake Como

with Monica Ginnaio

Overview

We’ve designed this journey to experience Lake Como in a way that feels both structured and relaxed.

Boats and estates along the lush mountainous landscape of Lake Como, Italy.

We begin in Como, which gives us a more local, lively introduction to the lake, walking through the town, taking the funicular up to Brunate, and visiting our first villas. After two nights, we move across to Varenna, which is quieter and more intimate, and becomes our base for the rest of the trip.

From there, the days are spent moving around the lake, by boat, on foot, and through its gardens and villages. We visit some of the most beautiful villas, spend time in Bellagio, and include moments where you can simply enjoy being there, without rushing from one place to the next.

Highlights

Surrounded by the foothills of the Alps, the lake is shaped like an inverted “Y, ” its deep blue waters framed by steep wooded slopes and small villages clinging to the shoreline.

The gardens of Lake Como are unlike those elsewhere in Italy. Because of the steep terrain, many are built in terraces that descend dramatically toward the water. Stone staircases, balustrades, pergolas, and sculptural elements frame each level, while cypress, plane trees, wisteria, camellias, and centuries-old magnolias thrive in the lake’s surprisingly mild microclimate.

WHERE YOU’LL STAY

The Palace

Located directly on the edge of Lake Como, the Palace Hotel offers an ideal base to begin our journey. Set in the historic centre, the hotel allows easy access to everything, whether it’s wandering through the streets of

Como, taking the funicular up to Brunate, or simply walking along the lake. Its location makes it possible to experience both the town and the landscape without needing to go far.

The building itself dates back to 1898 and was the first grand hotel in Como. While it has evolved over time, it has kept its original character, with architecture that reflects the elegance of the period.

Varenna

Hotel Royal Victoria

For the second part of our journey, we stay at the Hotel Royal Victoria, ideally located in the heart of Varenna, directly on the lake.

The hotel has a long history, originally opened in the 19th century and known for having welcomed Queen Victoria in 1838, an influence that still shapes its identity today. More recently, it has been carefully restored, preserving its character while bringing a renewed sense of comfort and elegance to the rooms and shared spaces.

What makes this place special is its setting. The views over the lake, especially at sunset, are remarkable, something that has inspired artists and visitors for generations.
