Dordogne: A Journey Through Gardens

with Amy Kupec Larue

Overview

The Dordogne is one of France’s most beautiful and untouched regions, known for its soft landscapes, winding rivers, and remarkable architecture.

This journey is devoted to exploring the region’s exceptional gardens, led by renowned garden expert and historian Amy Kupec Larue. The Dordogne is home to many gardens that have received the “Jardin Remarquable” designation, awarded by the French Ministry of Culture to sites of cultural, aesthetic, and historical importance.

While visiting a garden is always a pleasure, what makes this experience truly special is the access. Throughout the trip, we are welcomed into private properties and guided by the owners and creators themselves, offering a much deeper understanding of each place.

Highlights

The Dordogne, also known as the Périgord, lies in southwest France. Unlike more formal regions of France, the gardens of the Dordogne are deeply connected to the terrain.

Historically, the region has long been associated with château gardens, manor houses, and Renaissance influences. In some estates, you’ll find formal parterres and structured layouts; in others, romantic plantings spill over old stone paths. Water plays an important role; fountains, reflecting pools, and irrigation systems have shaped many of the historic gardens for centuries.

WHAT ARE PEOPLE SAYING

WHERE YOU’LL STAY

Manoir d’Hautegente

For this journey, we are based at Manoir d’Hautegente, a beautiful and intimate property set in the heart of the Périgord Noir. Nestled along the river and surrounded by 15 hectares of greenery, the manoir feels immediately peaceful, almost removed from everything.

The house itself has a long history, having been part of the same family for generations. Today, it is run by Patrick, his wife Marie-Josée, and their family, who have carefully preserved its character while creating a warm and welcoming environment for guests.

Each room is different, with a mix of updated interiors and more traditional touches, reflecting the spirit of the house. The property is made up of two buildings, the main house and the old mill, offering a variety of spaces to relax, from cosy salons to shaded outdoor areas.
