Where to Stay in a Château in France

A selection of intimate château stays across France that we genuinely love and recommend.

Over the years, we’ve realised that where you stay can completely shape how you experience a destination. Especially in France, where some of the most memorable places aren’t large hotels, but smaller, family-run properties that feel personal, lived-in, and deeply connected to their surroundings.

Château stays are a perfect example of this. Not in the traditional sense of grand, formal estates, but rather places that open their doors to guests in a way that feels warm, relaxed, and authentic.

These are the kinds of addresses we look for when we travel and the ones we love recommending. Thoughtfully restored homes, often run by passionate owners, where the experience goes beyond just spending a night.

Here are a few of our favourite château stays across France, each offering a different atmosphere but sharing that same sense of character and intimacy.

Château de la Ruche

Located near Le Mans in the Pays de la Loire, Château de la Ruche is a small 18th-century château set within 15 acres of private parkland.

What makes this place stand out is its scale and atmosphere. With only a few guest rooms, it feels more like staying in someone’s home than in a hotel. The interiors have been carefully restored to preserve original features, with antique beds, simple but elegant décor, and a strong focus on comfort.

The château is run by a family who moved from the UK to restore the property themselves, which gives the experience a very personal feel. It’s relaxed, welcoming, and intentionally not overly formal.

Breakfast is a highlight, with fresh bread, homemade preserves, and produce from the garden. It’s a good option whether you’re planning a short countryside escape or a stopover while travelling through the region.

Château de Curzay

Château de Curzay offers a very different experience. Set within a 120-hectare estate crossed by the river Vonne, it’s a place designed for slowing down and spending time in nature.

The château combines a long history, from medieval structures to 18th-century additions, with a more contemporary approach to interiors. The spaces feel curated but comfortable, with a mix of antiques, artworks, and modern touches.

There are several shared areas, including a large salon, a library, and smaller rooms designed for relaxing or spending time with others. Outside, the estate offers plenty of space to explore, whether walking through the grounds, spending time by the pool, or even kayaking along the river.

It works particularly well for longer stays, or for those travelling as a group who want both space and privacy.

Château de Bonnemare

Just over an hour from Paris, Château de Bonnemare is located in the heart of Normandy, close to Rouen, Giverny, and Lyons-la-Forêt.

This 16th-century château has remained in the same family since the 19th century, and that continuity is very much part of its charm. The interiors reflect different periods, with some rooms featuring original historic décor from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The experience here is straightforward and welcoming. The owners are very present and focused on making guests feel comfortable, whether you’re staying for a short visit or a longer trip.

It’s also a good base for exploring the surrounding region, particularly if you’re interested in impressionist heritage or Normandy’s countryside.

Château de Boucéel

Located near Mont Saint-Michel, Château de Boucéel is a family-owned property that has been passed down through generations.

The château balances historical character with a comfortable, residential feel. The rooms are individually decorated and overlook the surrounding park, which extends across 11 hectares.

The atmosphere is calm and understated, with a focus on hospitality and attention to detail. Guests also have access to a heated pool and various services designed to make the stay easy and relaxed.

Its location makes it a convenient base for exploring both Normandy and Brittany, while still offering a quiet environment away from busier areas.

Château de Tourreau

In Provence, Château de Tourreau offers a more expansive, private setting. The estate covers around eight hectares and is surrounded by vineyards, with a classic cypress-lined entrance leading up to the property.

The château dates back to the 17th century and has evolved over time into a place designed for hosting groups and longer stays. There are multiple outdoor spaces, including gardens, terraces, and a pool, making it particularly suited for warmer months.

The layout encourages spending time outside, whether relaxing by the water, walking through the grounds, or simply enjoying the setting.

It’s a strong option for those looking for a more secluded stay in Provence, especially for group travel or special occasions.
