The Most Romantic Hotels in France for a Dream Getaway

Our favourite addresses for a romantic escape, whether you’re celebrating something special or simply looking for an excuse to spend a few days somewhere beautiful.

We’re often asked for hotel recommendations for anniversaries, honeymoons, birthdays, or simply long weekends away together.

And honestly, France is full of beautiful hotels. The difficult part isn’t finding one. It’s choosing the right one.

Some couples dream of a château surrounded by vineyards. Others want breakfast overlooking the Mediterranean, a room filled with antiques, or a hotel where they can spend an entire weekend without ever feeling the need to leave the property.

From a hidden peninsula on the Riviera to a historic mansion in Paris and a château overlooking the Dordogne, these are some of our favourite romantic hotels in France.

Hôtel La Mirande, Avignon

If your idea of romance involves history, beautiful interiors, and candlelit dinners, it’s difficult to beat La Mirande.

Located directly beside the Palais des Papes in Avignon, this remarkable hotel feels like stepping into another century. Every room is different, filled with antique fabrics, period details, and the sort of elegance that never feels forced. Looking out over the historic palace from the garden or your bedroom window is one of those experiences that makes you immediately feel transported.

What we love most is that La Mirande feels deeply connected to Provence. The restaurant celebrates local producers and seasonal ingredients, while the entire property carries the atmosphere of old-world France without ever feeling stuffy.

Saint-Tropez isn’t usually associated with peace and quiet, but Château de la Messardière offers a completely different side of the Riviera.

Perched high above Pampelonne Bay, surrounded by gardens and umbrella pines, the nineteenth-century château feels wonderfully removed from the bustle below. The views alone are worth the journey. Everywhere you look, there is sea, sky, and that soft Mediterranean light that makes the Côte d’Azur so irresistible.

We particularly love it in the shoulder seasons, when the crowds have disappeared but the weather remains beautiful. Afternoons by the pool, sunset drinks overlooking the bay, and dinners that last well into the evening.

It’s easy to understand why this remains one of the Riviera’s most iconic addresses.

If we had to choose one hotel that feels like a secret, it would probably be Cap Estel.

Hidden away on its own private peninsula between Nice and Monaco, this is one of the most spectacular settings on the French Riviera. The hotel is surrounded by the sea on nearly every side, creating the feeling of being on a private island rather than on the mainland.

There are only a handful of rooms, beautiful Mediterranean gardens, a private beach, and endless quiet corners where you can sit and watch the water.

It feels intimate, discreet, and incredibly special. The sort of place you whisper about rather than post all over social media.

For a romantic escape on the Riviera, it is hard to imagine anything more magical.

Maison Proust, Paris

Paris is full of beautiful hotels, but Maison Proust offers something entirely different.

Located in the heart of the Marais, the hotel was designed as an homage to Marcel Proust and the Belle Époque. Every room, salon, and corridor feels like part of a beautifully imagined Parisian novel. Rich fabrics, antique objects, period artwork, and intimate spaces create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the city.

We love recommending Maison Proust to travellers looking for a hotel with personality. It feels romantic without being obvious, luxurious without being flashy, and distinctly Parisian in all the best ways.

After a day wandering through the streets of the Marais, there are few better places to return to.

Château de la Treyne, Dordogne Valley

Some hotels are romantic because of their interiors. Others because of their setting.

Château de la Treyne has both.

Overlooking the Dordogne River from a dramatic cliffside position, this Relais & Châteaux property feels like something from a fairytale. The château is surrounded by formal French gardens, ancient trees, and panoramic views across the valley.

We particularly love the sense of tranquillity here. Days are spent exploring nearby villages, wandering through the grounds, or simply sitting on the terrace overlooking the river.

Château de Cîteaux, Burgundy

Opening in 2026, Château de Cîteaux is already one of the hotels we’re most excited about.

Located in Meursault, in the heart of Burgundy’s vineyards, the property combines centuries of history with the understated elegance that Fontenille Collection does so well. Built above twelfth-century Cistercian wine cellars, the château is surrounded by some of France’s most celebrated vineyards and landscapes.

For wine lovers, it’s hard to imagine a more romantic setting. Days can be spent visiting wineries, cycling through the vineyards, enjoying long lunches, and returning each evening to a château steeped in history.

It’s exactly the kind of place we can imagine disappearing to for a few days and leaving feeling completely refreshed.
