Finding Treasures at the Chatou Fair

©Sébastien Siraudeau – MFCH Magazine

The Foire de Chatou isn’t just an antiques fair; it’s a celebration of history, craftsmanship, and the thrill of discovery. For over 50 years, this beloved event has drawn visitors from near and far, all eager to uncover hidden treasures.

There’s something enchanting about strolling through the aisles, each stand brimming with character and history. The air is filled with the mingling scents of aged wood, fresh bread, and rich cheeses. Everywhere you look, there’s a story waiting to be uncovered.

The fair is unlike any other, not just because of its size (over 300 exhibitors spread across 21,000 square metres) but because of its unique atmosphere. Twice a year, in March and September, this island becomes a bustling, joyful meeting place for antique dealers, collectors, and enthusiasts. Dealers don’t just come to sell; they settle in for ten days, creating a welcoming space filled with their finest treasures.

What makes Chatou so special is the mix of people it attracts. On weekends, families arrive in droves, eager to enjoy a day out among the stands, while weekdays offer quieter moments for more focused treasure hunting. Some visitors arrive with a list and a mission, searching for the perfect Louis XV chair, a set of fine linens, or just the right still life for a gallery wall. Others come with no plan at all, browsing simply for the pleasure of it.

The fair is as much about the experience as the purchases. There’s an unspoken etiquette to buying here: a polite smile, genuine interest, and perhaps a touch of friendly negotiation. And there’s a charming tradition we’ve come to love, resting your hand on an item while you decide. It’s an unofficial “I’m thinking” sign, and once your hand lifts, it’s fair game for another eager buyer.

Originally known as La Foire à la Brocante et aux Jambons (Ham and Brocante Fair), the Chatou Fair still nods to its roots with an entire aisle dedicated to regional French foods. It’s impossible to resist pausing here, whether for a wedge of creamy cheese or a perfectly crusty baguette. And if hunger strikes while browsing, there are several excellent restaurants on site where you can relax and refuel.

The next Foire de Chatou will take place from March 7 to 16, 2025, and we can’t wait to be there. This is more than just an antiques fair, it’s an event that celebrates craftsmanship, history, and the simple joy of finding something truly special. Whether you’re an experienced collector or just looking for a unique day out, Chatou offers something for everyone.

And this March, we’re excited to invite you to join us for our Antique Buying in and Around Paris Tour, led by Sharon Santoni. The tour includes a day at the Chatou Fair, where we’ll guide you through the stands, introduce you to our favourite dealers, and help you uncover treasures of your own. It’s a perfect way to experience the magic of Chatou with like-minded enthusiasts.
