Travel Joural
Every September, Paris opens doors that usually stay closed and it’s one of the best weekends of the year to explore the city differently.
The Journées du Patrimoine (European Heritage Days) have become a beloved tradition since they began in France in 1984. For one weekend only, places normally closed to the public open their doors, and some of the city’s most familiar landmarks reveal a new side of their history. From private mansions to government buildings, hidden workshops and even the backstage world of Parisian institutions, it’s the perfect excuse to be curious.
This year’s edition takes place on 19, 20 and 21 September 2025, with the theme patrimoine architectural. And as always, the program is packed with special visits, guided tours, and unique events across Paris.
Here are some highlights we suggest you don’t miss.
Banque de France – Hôtel de Toulouse (1er arrondissement)
The Banque de France opens only on rare occasions, which makes this visit especially exciting. Housed in the Hôtel de Toulouse since 1811, the building is a jewel of Parisian architecture. Inside, the Galerie Dorée, a dazzling 40-metre-long gilded gallery designed by François Mansart, is the star attraction. During the Journées du Patrimoine, you’ll also be able to discover the grand salons, historic furniture, and works of art, while learning more about the history of this powerful institution.
Hôtel de Sully (Marais)
In the heart of the Marais, the Hôtel de Sully is one of those places you may walk past without realising the history behind its walls. Built in the 1620s, this hôtel particulier once belonged to the Duchesse de Sully. During the weekend, the normally private apartments are open, giving visitors the chance to step back into 17th-century Paris. With its elegant courtyard and garden, this is a stop full of atmosphere and history.
Hôtel de Ville de Paris
For many Parisians, the Hôtel de Ville is a familiar backdrop, but few have ever seen inside. The Journées du Patrimoine are the perfect chance. Visitors can wander through the richly decorated reception rooms, the Council Chamber, the Mayor’s office, and even the beautiful library. The current building, completed in 1882 after the original was destroyed in a fire, is a masterpiece of architecture and a symbol of the city.
Palais du Luxembourg – Le Sénat
The Palais du Luxembourg, home to the French Senate, sits proudly at the edge of the Luxembourg Gardens. For this special weekend, visitors are invited inside both the main palace and the Petit Luxembourg. Highlights include the Senate chamber, the grand library painted by Delacroix, and the Salle des Conférences. Walking through these halls, you can almost feel the layers of political history that have shaped France.
Behind the Scenes at the Louvre
It’s not every day you get a glimpse of what happens behind the world’s most visited museum. The Louvre takes part in the Journées du Patrimoine with special access to its workshops and lesser-known spaces. For those curious about art conservation and the hidden life of the museum, this is a fascinating opportunity. And yes, admission is free, making it the perfect time to enjoy this Parisian icon without rushing.
École Militaire (7e arrondissement)
Founded by Louis XV in 1751, the École Militaire has trained generations of French officers, including a young Napoleon Bonaparte. Normally closed to the public, it opens exceptionally during this weekend. The 2025 program focuses on Napoleon, with visits through the vast complex of courtyards, classrooms, and ceremonial halls. A chance to discover an important and often overlooked part of Parisian heritage.
