Discover the Timeless Charm of Saint-Paul de Vence

Nestled in the heart of the French Riviera, Saint-Paul de Vence is a gem that embodies history, art, and culture. This enchanting medieval village will be our home during the Gardens of the Riviera tour, with accommodations at the beautiful Le Saint Paul Hotel. Prepare to be captivated by the rich heritage and breathtaking scenery that make Saint-Paul de Vence a must-visit destination.

A Walk Through History

Saint-Paul de Vence invites you to step back into its medieval past, surrounded by well-preserved fortifications dating from the 12th century. Originally a fortified settlement, it gained its fortified city status in 1388 when the County of Nice fell under Savoyard rule. The village’s strategic location was further enhanced in the 16th century when King Francis I modernized its defenses, creating bastions with advanced fortification features to guard against invasions.

As you wander through the narrow, pedestrian-only streets, each turn reveals a piece of the village’s storied past. The charming central fountain adds a gentle, melodic backdrop to your stroll, echoing the village’s historical ambiance. Saint-Paul de Vence’s rich heritage is brought to life not only through its architecture but also through the sounds and sights that weave its captivating narrative.

La Colombe d’Or

An Artistic Mecca

Since the 1920s, Saint-Paul de Vence has been a haven for artists. Renowned figures such as Picasso, Dufy, Matisse, and Marc Chagall have graced this village with their presence, creating works that continue to inspire. Chagall, in particular, lived here for 19 years and is laid to rest in the local cemetery, a testament to his deep connection to the village.

The Colombe d’Or hotel and restaurant is another testament to the village’s artistic legacy. This historic establishment has hosted world cinema stars like Greta Garbo, Sophia Loren, and Catherine Deneuve. Many artists paid for their stay by leaving behind their artworks, making the Colombe d’Or a unique blend of hospitality and art.

Discover Maison Godet: A Legacy of Fine Perfumes in Saint-Paul de Vence

One of our favorite addresses in Saint-Paul de Vence is Maison Godet, a boutique owned by Sonia Godet. As you step into her charming store, you’re greeted by a stunning chandelier, authentic floor tiles, and delightful scents that draw you in. Sonia, a talented “nez” or nose, creates exquisite perfumes. Her family’s history in perfumery and fine cognacs dates back to the 16th century. Reviving her great-grandfather’s brand, Parfums Godet, Sonia combines traditional craftsmanship with modern elegance. Her perfumes and handmade soaps are locally produced, reflecting her deep passion and pride for her family’s legacy.

Exploring the Village

Saint-Paul de Vence is a treasure trove of galleries, shops, and art studios. The main street, rue Grande, leads you from the north gate (Porte de Vence) to the southern end where the cemetery is located. Along the way, you’ll encounter charming boutiques and eateries that offer a taste of local life.

The Place de la Grande Fontaine is a highlight, featuring a historic fountain that was once the village’s most important gathering spot. At the highest point of the village, you’ll find the Collégiale de la Conversion-de-Saint-Paul, a church dating back to the 14th century, and the beautifully restored Chapel of White Penitents.
