Autumn in France is one of our favourite moments to be outdoors. The light softens, the pace calms, and yet the gardens still feel full of life.
This is the season of dahlias at their peak, hydrangeas deepening into softer shades, and grasses swaying elegantly in the breeze. In the south, hibiscus and oleanders stretch out summer just a little longer. And by November, camellias, cyclamens, and heathers have stepped in, making sure that colour lingers right through the shorter days.
Visiting a garden now feels different from spring or summer. The crowds are gone, the air is crisp, and there’s a kind of intimacy about walking through borders that are glowing with asters and miscanthus. It feels like nature is letting us in on its last, most generous performance of the year.
Here are some of our favourite gardens to see in France during autumn. Each one captures the spirit of the season in its own way.

Parc Botanique de Haute Bretagne, Brittany
If you love fiery colours, this garden will take your breath away in late October. The Japanese maples and golden ginkgos transform the park into a glowing mosaic, while morning mists drift through the trees. Spread across 25 themed gardens, the Parc de Haute Bretagne is as playful as it is poetic. Children can run through labyrinths, explore bamboo groves, or follow a treasure hunt, while adults lose themselves in corners like the Jardin de la Lune Rousse.

Le Jardin Plume, Normandy
Le Jardin Plume is one of those places that makes you slow down. Enclosed by tall hedges, its narrow paths bring you right into the middle of asters, persicarias, and tall grasses shimmering with silver plumes. In September and October, the garden seems alive with bees and butterflies taking full advantage of the late blooms. There’s a nostalgia in the air here , the kind of gentle melancholy that comes with autumn but also an energy that makes the garden feel joyful, as if it’s having one last dance before winter.

Château du Rivau, Loire Valley
At Rivau, autumn feels like a celebration. The orchard fills with heritage apple varieties, names like Calville, Gros Jaune, and Api Noir, while late roses and chrysanthemums perfume the air. The Fairy Path, or Chemin des Fées, glows with dahlias and fiery grasses right through until the first frosts. And if you visit in late October, the Pumpkin and Autumn Festival adds a playful note to the gardens’ seasonal beauty.

Jardins d’Eyrignac, Dordogne
The Jardins d’Eyrignac are all about structure and timeless elegance. Known for their topiary and symmetry, they are green and serene in every season. But in autumn, around the potager, dahlias add unexpected bursts of colour that contrast beautifully with the clipped evergreens.

Château de Saint-Jean de Beauregard, Île-de-France
Just outside Paris, Saint-Jean de Beauregard is an easy escape for an autumn afternoon. The 17th-century potager is still full of flowers and vegetables, while the park turns warm with autumn colours. Walking under the tree-lined allées with leaves crunching underfoot is one of those simple pleasures of the season.
