The Best Hotels in France for an Autumn Getaway

Autumn is one of our favourite times to travel in France, the light turns golden, and life slows to a gentler rhythm.

While summer has its charm, there’s something truly special about France in autumn. The crowds thin, the vineyards turn to shades of red and gold, and the markets overflow with figs, grapes, mushrooms, and apples. It’s the season for long walks, evenings by the fire, and the simple pleasure of lingering over a good meal.

When we think about where to go in France at this time of year, our mind turns to places that feel both grounding and inspiring; close to nature, full of character, and with a sense of comfort that makes you want to stay a little longer. Here are some of our favourite hotels for an autumn escape.

Lily of the Valley – Côte Varoise

Just minutes from Saint-Tropez yet surrounded by the wild beauty of the Cap Lardier, Lily of the Valley is a haven of wellbeing. Autumn here means long walks along the empty beach of Gigaro, mornings that begin with yoga or a spa treatment, and evenings gazing out over the Mediterranean from your terrace. We love how the hotel combines luxury with simplicity, polished marble and raw concrete softened by natural wood and leather. It’s the kind of place where you arrive and instantly feel lighter.

Château de la Treyne – Dordogne

Perched above the Dordogne River, Château de la Treyne is the picture of French romance in autumn. The formal gardens turn golden, the air is scented with cedar trees, and mist often lingers over the river in the morning. Inside, each room has its own character, blending historic charm with comfort. We love the feeling of staying in a private home, complete with long walks in the park and perhaps the company of Java, the château’s Labrador. For us, this is autumn at its most peaceful and authentic.

La Maison de Lucie – Honfleur

In Normandy, La Maison de Lucie feels like a secret you’re happy to have discovered. Tucked behind an old gate in Honfleur, this 18th-century residence is intimate, cosy, and full of charm. In autumn, with the fireplace lit and the town quiet after summer, it’s the perfect spot to slow down. Each of the nine rooms is different, with antique details and warm colours that make you feel at home. We love it here for its simplicity and its soul, a place that feels more like staying with friends than at a hotel.

Misincu – Cap Corse

Corsica is magical in autumn, when the sea is still warm but the crowds have gone. Misincu, on Cap Corse, offers both mountain and sea in one breathtaking setting. The architecture is simple and elegant, echoing the nature around it with wood, marble, and soft linen. From your balcony, you watch the light change across the Mediterranean, or walk down to the hotel’s private beach. For us, autumn here means a slower, more personal experience of the island, a chance to connect with the landscape and disconnect from everything else.

Hôtel Crillon le Brave – Provence

In the heart of the Vaucluse, Crillon le Brave feels like it was made for autumn. Surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, the village-hotel is built from 17th- and 18th-century houses, each filled with light and views across to Mont Ventoux. We love wandering through nearby villages, visiting antique shops, and returning to the hotel for dinner by chef Thomas Lesage, who brings out the very best of Provence’s autumn produce. This is Provence at its most soulful, away from the summer crowds, rich with colour and flavour.

Brindos, Lac & Château – Basque Country

Between Biarritz and Anglet, Brindos is all about slowing down by the water. In autumn, the lake is often misty in the morning, the colours of the surrounding forest are changing, and the floating lodges offer one of the most unique experiences in France. We love how this place combines nature and elegance, spa treatments overlooking the lake, cosy rooms in the château, and evenings of Basque warmth and hospitality. It’s the kind of hotel where you instantly feel connected to the season.
