Once a swamp (“marais” in French), this area — spanning parts of the 3rd and 4th arrondissements on the Right Bank of the Seine — was drained in the 12th century, paving the way for its transformation into one of Paris’s most historically and culturally significant districts. By the 17th century, the Marais had become the fashionable epicenter of the Parisian aristocracy, with noble families building grand hôtels particuliers (private mansions) that still stand today.
