Looking for a change of scenery just outside the city? These countryside retreats are the perfect mix of French elegance, nature, and timeless charm.
One of the things we love most about living in France is how quickly you can slip away from the city and find yourself somewhere entirely different, somewhere slower, calmer, and effortlessly beautiful. Whether it’s for a romantic weekend, a special celebration, or simply to rest and recharge, we’re often drawn to places just outside of Paris that feel like another world entirely. From grand historic abbeys to quiet forest hideaways and elegant châteaux by the river, here are some of our favourite addresses for a weekend escape à la française.

Abbaye des Vaux de Cernay
Grandeur, history, and a touch of magic, just 45 minutes from Paris.
Hidden in the forest of Rambouillet, this former Cistercian abbey is now a spectacular countryside hotel reimagined by Paris Society. With interiors designed by Cordélia de Castellane and a setting that feels like a dream, the Abbaye offers the perfect mix of heritage and comfort. Here, you can wander through vast gardens, sip cocktails in a salon lined with tapestries, or simply enjoy the stillness. Every season has its charm, whether you’re wrapped in a blanket by the fire or picnicking by the lake.

Le Barn
For nature lovers, foodies, and anyone craving a breath of fresh air.
Set in the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional de la Haute Vallée de Chevreuse, Le Barn is less a hotel and more a way of life. Think long walks in the forest, lazy mornings by the fireplace, horse riding at the nearby Haras de la Cense, and seasonal cooking from the garden’s permaculture produce. The atmosphere is relaxed but thoughtful, with a Scandinavian simplicity that pairs beautifully with its rustic French setting. We love it for spontaneous getaways when the city gets too loud.

Domaine de Primard
A riverside château with timeless elegance and a garden lover’s soul.
Once the private home of actress Catherine Deneuve, Domaine de Primard is now one of the most refined retreats in Normandy. Nestled on the banks of the Eure river, this 18th-century château is surrounded by 30 hectares of immaculate gardens, meadows, and quiet woodlands. Every room is graceful, every detail curated. There’s a Caudalie spa, exquisite dining, and a sense that time moves a little more slowly here. It’s one of our favourite places to reset and indulge in simple luxuries.

Les Sources de Cheverny
Vineyards, château life, and countryside chic in the Loire Valley.
If you’re dreaming of wine tastings and château strolls, this is your place. Les Sources de Cheverny lies between Chambord and Chenonceau and offers the kind of experience that’s both grounding and utterly indulgent. Stay in a stone cottage or lakeside cabanon, dine on gourmet food, unwind at the Caudalie spa, and enjoy walks through the forest or vines. There’s something soothing about this place, it feels like a family home, but with every possible comfort.

Maison du Val – Les Maisons de Campagne
An all-inclusive countryside escape, where everything is thought of for you.
Just on the edge of the Saint-Germain forest, this relaxed retreat is ideal for families or anyone who simply wants to arriver et profiter. At Maison du Val, everything is included, from brunches and apéritifs to yoga, bicycles, and kids’ activities. The interiors are warm and charming, like a country house where time doesn’t matter. It’s especially lovely for a multi-generational weekend away, where everyone can relax in their own way.
